ABSENT friends were remembered during a 30th anniversary school reunion.
A reunion of English Martyrs School’s Class of 1984 was held at Hartlepool Rovers Quoit Club, in Easington Road.
Around 80 people turned up, including the year group’s former teachers, Mrs Page and ex-headteacher Mr Relton, and Joe Linden and Michael Lee.
The event raised £295, which saw £150 donated to the town-based cancer cause the Kay Smith Research Fund, and £145 given to cleft palate charity The Smile Train.
Kay, who was in the Class of 1984, died in 2006 after a year-long battle with breast cancer, and The Smile Train was a cause close to classmate Billy Barber, who also passed away.
Noreen Bulley (nee Watson) who was one of the organisers, said: “It was excellent, the turnout was absolutely brilliant.
“We are talking about having a reunion at Christmas and we will definitely have a big one in five years time. “People came from all over the country to attend.
“Everyone is keeping in touch and we plan to do more for the Kay Smith Fund.”
She said about seven people from the yeargroup have passed away, and pictures were on display of Kay and Billy.
Noreen thanked Kay’s family for supporting the event, and also thanked former pupil Mark Dickinson for paying for the disco and arranging for a photographer.
A Facebook page has been set up which is called English Martyrs Class of ‘84 Reunion and former classmates have been sharing memories and school photographs on the social media site.
