DRIVERS faced long delays after a busy dual carriageway was closed for almost two hours due to a two-mile spillage of oil.
A tanker started to leak the fuel on the Norton slip-road onto the A19 northbound at around 1.15pm today (Wednesday).
The leak continued as it travelled up the A19 and onto the A689 slip-road, on the outskirts of Hartlepool.
The trail of oil was then seen heading west towards Sedgefield.
For safety reasons the road was closed from the A19 onto the A689 westbound.
Crews from Cleveland Fire Brigade attended the incident and helped to clean up the slick.
The road re-opend at 3pm.
A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police, whose officers were also in attendance to shut the road, said: “There was an oil spill from a tanker which went on for about two miles.
“Police and fire brigade were in attendance and the road had to be closed from the A19 onto the A689 west bound road.”
