A Hartlepool funeral directors are on a mission to deliver some Christmas cheer to underprivileged children.

Mason and Gerald Martin Funeral Directors is once again supporting Operation Christmas Child this year and residents are encouraged to make up shoeboxes packed with small gifts.

They will then wing their way to youngsters with next to nothing in developing countries across the world.

The firm in Park Road, Hartlepool, has been collecting the gift-packed boxes for the appeal for the last 12 years.

It estimates it has collected over 1,000 of the special shoeboxes from generous residents in that time which will have put a smile on hundreds of children’s faces.

A spokesman for Mason and Gerald Martin Funeral Service said: “We very much hope that this year again will be as successful as it has been over the last years, bringing a smile and delight to many underprivileged children across the world.”

Operation Christmas Child is co-ordinated nationally by the Samaritan’s Purse charity.

Supporters can find out how to make one of the boxes by visiting their office in Park Road, Hartlepool, where leaflets are available.

Suggested items to put in the shoeboxes include small toys, but no war-related items, stationary and colouring books and hygiene items such as toothbrush , toothpaste and flannel.

Hats, caps, gloves and scarves are also welcome.

The completed boxes must be dropped off at Mason and Gerald Martin, 129 Park Road, no later than Monday, November 19.

This is to ensure that they reach their destination in good time for Christmas.
