A difference of opinions

I can advise Mr Bearby (Mail, May 9) that both of the likely USA presidential candidates have offered opinions on Britain's in/out EU referendum.

Unsurprisingly, Hilary Clinton (Democrat) parroted exactly the same hypocritical garbage uttered only days before by incumbent President Obama.

She urged the UK to surrender its democracy and sovereignty – something the USA would never, ever even contemplate.

Then, the almost certain Republican nominee took the opposite view and urged the UK to re-assert its independence and leave the wholly undemocratic EU.

Incidentally, during the campaign, Trump’s Republican rivals Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio expressed similar sentiments.

The Republican party is very defensive of the founding principles of the US constitution: freedom, independence and democracy.

That these expressions of support for the Brexit case should be forthcoming is wholly in line with its principles (remember principles?)

Was not the basis of the US War of Independence “No taxation without representation”?

I recall the words of the late Caspar Weinberger, who was President Reagan’s Secretary of State.

In London he was asked a question about the EU, to which he replied: “Have no truck with this insipid, introspective European state.”
