A PENSIONER killed on the A179 has been named by police as Joan Coulson.

The 85-year-old woman was a passenger in a white Ford Ka when it collided with a black Mitsubishi Warrior near the junction with the northbound carriageway of the A19, on the outskirts of Hartlepool.

The woman, from Durham, was taken by ambulance to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, after the crash at 8pm on Monday, where she died around 10 hours later.

Councillor Paul Beck, who represents the Hart ward, has called for action to be taken to make the junction safer as her death was the second in a matter of weeks on the stretch of road. Durham County Council confirmed safety work is expected to take place in the autumn.

The driver of the Ford, an 84-year-old man, suffered whiplash and bruising. The 43-year-old female driver of the Warrior and her teenage son, suffered similar injuries.
