A POPULAR after-school programme will move into a new home as part of Hartlepool Borough Council’s continued cost-cutting.

The council-run Oscar Playcentre will merge its two existing operations, in Miers Avenue and Wynyard Road, in Hartlepool, into one, based at West Hartlepool Rugby Club, in Catcote Road.

Bosses say by merging the centres the council is saving money on overheads. But they claim the excellent level of service for children aged from three to 16 will be maintained.

Youngsters and staff will move into the new building, which is owned by Hartlepool Sixth Form College, on Monday, April 2.

Sandra Robinson, the council’s out of school co-ordinator, said: “By merging our two centres we are saving money on overheads but will maintain the excellent level of service.

“West Hartlepool Rugby Club is centrally located within the town and the facilities are ideal.

“Our children are very excited about moving into our new home and can’t wait for the beginning of April. I’d like to thank West Rugby Club and Hartlepool Sixth Form College.

“They have both been very supportive, and we do appreciate the help they have given.”

Children can enjoy a range of activities at the new Oscar Playcentre.

There’s a chance to preview the new facility at an open afternoon later this month.

The event will take place on Wednesday, March 28 from 3.30pm-6.30pm.

Under the Oscar programme, fully-qualified staff collect children from school and take them to the centre.

Parents have until 6pm to pick their up their children.

In the school holidays there is a full day care provision. Children can be dropped off from 8.30am and must be collected by 5.45pm.

Meanwhile, youngsters can enjoy an impressive programme of activities during the Easter holidays.

The centre will be open every day other than Good Friday and Easter Monday and children can take part in picnics, crafts and a mad hair day.

Sandra added: “This Easter we’ve got a really impressive programme to make sure that children have a fantastic time.

“Our costs are very seasonable and include any admission prices, transport and all art and craft materials.”
