A HARTLEPOOL junior football side’s cup final was interrupted twice when players had to be taken to hospital.

Greatham Under 16s won the Durham FA County Cup final 2-0 against South Shields Juniors, at Seaham, on Tuesday night.

But the game had to be halted on two separate occasions when ambulance crews attended to take two hurt players to hospital.

Greatham player Ethan Payne, 15, was stretchered off after he fell awkwardly and hurt his hip about 20 minutes into the second half.

While he was in the treatment room waiting for an ambulance, a South Shields player hurt his back and was taken to hospital.

Greatham manager Paul Beddow said: “In one match we had a fast response car and two ambulance crews attend to take them both to hospital.

“Ethan was in the treatment room till the end of the game so we were able to take the trophy in to show him.”

Ethan was kept in hospital overnight and was due to undergo a scan yesterday.

l A match report and pictures from Tuesday’s game will appear on Saturday in the Mail’s Youngstars sports pull-out.
