POLICE were called to a busy Hartlepool road this morning when a horse escaped from a field.

The animal is believed to have escaped from a field near to Elwick Road, in Hartlepool, and was spotted at the side of the carriageway eating grass about 7.35am.

Officers from Hartlepool Police went to the scene because they were concerned the horse may have wandered into the road.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said it then walked into Catcote Road and made its way down towards English Martyrs School.

It was removed and put back into the field by 8am.
