POLICE chased a suspected stolen car around eight miles from Peterlee to Hartlepool.
The Cleveland Police helicopter was launched, along with patrol cars on the ground, when the vehicle was reported travelling down the Coast Road, in Hartlepool, at around 1.45pm.
A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said the car, which was believed to be travelling from the Peterlee area, failed to stop and made off before heading into Hartlepool.
It ended up turning into James Street, off Burbank Street, and reaching a dead end.
Two men ran from the vehicle and have yet to be arrested by officers.
The helicopter could be seen and heard hovering low over the Burbank and Church Street areas of Hartlepool.
The spokeswoman said: “We pursued a suspected stolen vehicle from the Durham Police area which was seen heading along the Coast Road.
“The helicopter went up and the vehicle failed to stop and made off. It came to a stop in James Street at a dead end and then two males made off while the helicopter was overhead.”
