Police release further details about suspicious package which led to Hartlepool road closure

Police have today released fresh details about why a major road in Hartlepool was closed for around five hours.

The area around the AJS car wash, in Catcote Road, was sealed off following the incident with the road eventually reopening after 8pm on Thursday.

A Cleveland Police spokesman said on Friday: “Police were called at around 3.30pm yesterday to reports of a suspicious package at an MOT centre, on Catcote Road, in Hartlepool, near to Brierton Lane.

“A small section of road Catcote Road was closed while investigations began and continued into the evening.

“Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists were called to assess the package and confirmed that it did not pose a threat to the public.

“EOD were stood down at around 8.30pm.”

Motorists on the school run and travelling home from work were forced to make detours while police, soldiers and the fire brigade investigated.
