A SOLDIER’S trip to war-torn Afghanistan was all worth it – when he got to meet his ultimate pin-up.
Hartlepool man Sapper Paul Wallace, who is a member of the Royal Engineers search team based in the Middle East, was thrilled when he got to meet pop princess Cheryl Cole and had his picture taken with her.
The Geordie beauty had gone to the base where he was staying as part of the Pride of Britain Awards, and was happy to be snapped with the town lad.
His proud mum Tracy Wallace, 45, from the King Oswy area of Hartlepool, contacted the Mail about her son’s meeting with the Girls Aloud star.
The mum-of-three, who is married to builder Paul Wallace, 43, and works at Robinson’s Bakery, in Windermere Road, said: “He rang home and said he’d met Cheryl Cole and had his picture taken with her, he was over the moon.
“He said ‘mam, she was stunning’. I said to him anyone would be stunning after being out there for six months!
“He said he couldn’t wipe the smile off his face, and he was really pleased to have met her. He said she was lovely and she cheered them all up.”
Paul, 19, a former English Martyrs School Pupil, joined the Army when he was 17, and went out to Afghanistan in March for six months.
He is due to return home from duty on October 2, and will be taking part in a fancy dress charity night to raise much-needed cash for the Help the Heroes fund.
Then, after a four-week break with his family and friends, Paul will travel with his battalion where he will be stationed at an Army base in Germany.
Tracy said: “We’re so proud of him being in the Army, he joined when he left school and he’s one of the youngest ones to go out there.
“I can’t wait until he gets on that plane to come home though, I’ve been worried sick about him.
“It’ll be lovely to see him and spend some time with him before he goes away again.”
