A NEW coaching initiative for budding young football stars has got off to a good start.
Hartlepool Borough Council’s sport and recreation service has teamed up with Premier Player Football Academy to provide weekly coaching to boys aged between five and 15 on the 3G all-weather pitch at the town’s Grayfields Recreation Ground.
The first sessions saw 26 young people attending.
One of Premier Player’s head coaches is Andy Collett, who also works as Hartlepool United’s goalkeeping coach.
He is supported by another head coach, former Middlesbrough midfielder Neil Maddison and there is also a team of assistant coaches including former Pools players Darren Williams, Paul Arnison, John Brackstone and Mark Tinkler.
Current Pools manager Neale Cooper showed his support for the initiative by attending its recent launch.
Daniel Garthwaite, assistant recreation officer with the council’s sport and recreation service, said: “We are keen to promote football to the town’s young people as a way of getting fitter and developing new skills and there is no better way than to learn from people who have played at the very top of the sport.
“We were pleased to attract 26 young people for the first sessions of this new initiative, and we hope that more will attend as word spreads.”
Weekly sessions take place every Wednesday from 6-7pm for boys aged six and nine and from 7-8pm for those aged 10 to 13.
Each session costs £5.
Premier Player has six academies across Teesside and County Durham. Its coaches are all ex-professional players with over 2,000 league appearances between them and they are all FA qualified, CRB checked and trained in first aid.
