WALKERS on the beach had a surprise when they came across this discovery.

A porpoise carcass was found near to the Blue Lagoon, on Seaton Carew beach, at around 12.50pm yesterday.

Coastguards were alerted and took details including the size and appearance of the mammal to send to the Natural History Museum, in London.

The museum will now decide whether to carry out a post-mortem on the washed-up porpoise.

If not Hartlepool Borough Council, which was also alerted of the discovery yesterday, will dispose of it.
