A POST office was due to re-open today after being closed for almost a week.
The Heugh Post Office, on Northgate, on Hartlepool’s Headland, closed unexpectedly at lunchtime last Thursday, leaving customers in the dark as to reasons why.
The closure particularly affected elderly people, who faced a two-mile journey to the nearest Post Office, at Brus Corner, in West View.
Bosses have confirmed that the closure was only temporary and the Headland branch was due to re-open today.
But mystery still surrounds the sudden closure, as Post Office chiefs would not reveal reasons for the branch shutting abruptly.
One local resident, a mum-of-four in her 40s, who did not wish to be named, said: “It seemed to shut after a half-day last Thursday and was closed all of Friday, Saturday and had been ever since.
“It’s been really inconvenient, it’s been the topic of conversation and speculation down here all week.
“The poor elderly people down here have had to go to West View or over to the town centre, it’s just been an inconvenience for people.”
But Post Office spokeswoman said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to our customers following the temporary closure of Heugh Post Office branch.
“The Post Office will be reopening today.”
