ALMOST 55,000 properties were left without electricity when a power cut hit Hartlepool.

National grid engineers were carrying out routine work on a sub station at Hart Moor, in Hartlepool, when power was lost at 11am today.

But the problem was quickly rectified and electricity was restored by 11.12am.

As well as affecting thousands of homes and businesses, Middleton Grange Shopping Centre and the Civic Centre, in Hartlepool, were evacuated as a precaution.

A spokeswoman for the National Power Grid said: “The problem occurred at 11am during some routine works at a sub station at the north of Hartlepool.

“Around 55,000 properties were affected. It was very short-lived and the power was restored.”
