A NEW award will be presented to pupils who complete a safety awareness scheme after being launched in honour of one of its leading lights.
The Bill Wilson Shield will be awarded to one Hartlepool Primary School that takes part in this year’s new Crucial Crew scheme hosted at Hartlepool Power Station.
The scheme, which is celebrating its 18th year, puts youngsters in mock dangerous situations to teach them how to respond.
Bill, who died last year, was a key organiser of Crucial Crew starting with his role as Hartlepool power station’s visitor centre guide and to becoming the event’s secretary.
The shield will be awarded as part of the Crucial Crew annual schools’ competition, where pupils produce work based on their experiences.
The entries will be judged by the Crucial Crew committee.
Bill’s widow Janet said: “He really enjoyed his role which he saw as an important of helping primary school children understand some of the risks they face and how they might address them.
“Obviously we all miss him but I think this shield is a great way to ensure his name is forever linked to Crucial Crew.”
The scheme is supported by numerous agencies including the council, fire brigade, police and coastguard.
