BUSINESSES are being urged to support Hartlepool & District Hospice by sponsoring a charity race day.

The fundraising event at Sedgefield Racecourse aims to raise at least £10,000 for the hospice.

It is being organised by Wynyard Business Park and will take place on Tuesday, December 2.

Five of the races have sponsors and the search is on to secure support for the remaining two.

Dave Garside, owner and managing director of Hartlepool-based security company NES Services, is sponsoring one race.

He said: “The hospice provides invaluable services to local people and as we are a local company that employs local people we decided that it would be good to show our support.

“Hopefully, sponsors will come forward for the remaining two races,” he said.

The cost of sponsoring a race is £1,500 and in return the sponsors get to name a race, display a promotional company banner at the racecourse and receive after-race VIP hospitality.

Dave, whose company is also a member of the hospice’s Guild of Patrons, added: “Even if every local business made just a small donation then it would make a massive difference.

“You never know when you, your family or your friends might need the hospice.”

Race day organiser Beth Dougherty, from Wynyard Park, said: “Hartlepool hospice is a very deserving cause and one that is close to our hearts.

“We are delighted that businesses, including NES Services, have come forward and shown their support by sponsoring races.”

Other aspects of the day, including the provision of pies and peas, the cost of dressing the room and evening entertainment, can also be sponsored.

Carol Sennett, corporate fundraiser at the hospice, added: “The generosity of local people like Dave Garside and businesses such as NES Services is vital in enabling us to continue providing our range of specialist care services.

“We would like to thank everyone who is supporting the race day.”

The race day starts at 12.30pm and guests will receive a three-course meal.

The event will continue into the night with entertainment by singer Joe Lawson, a charity auction and raffle.
