RAIL passengers were stranded for several hours after signal failures caused chaos.

A Grand Central service from Sunderland to London, via Hartlepool, was among those hit by problems on the East Coast Main Line between York and Northallerton at around 1pm on Saturday.

Delays and cancellations were also made right along the route while the problem was fixed, with services not moving again until 6.45pm.

Around 300 passengers on the Grand Central were reported to have climbed down a ladder and walk along the track to a level crossing.
