COMMUTERS faced disruption this morning after a gas leak near a railway line.

Northern Rail used buses to ferry passengers between Hartlepool Railway Station and Stockton after the problem near Greatham village, on the outskirts of town.

Grand Central trains were also diverted and they did not call at Hartlepool Station this morning.

A Northern Rail spokesman said: “There was a problem with a gas pipe on the track near Greatham and we were advised by Network Rail not to operate on that stretch until it had been resolved.”

The line was expected to re-open at around 10am.
