A CONSTRUCTION firm has been chosen to find the workforce for the building phase on a jobs-boosting renewable energy plant in the Tees Valley.
Air Products has awarded Tolent Construction with the civil engineering contract for its renewable energy plant at the New Energy and Technology Business Park near Billingham.
Tolent will be responsible for recruiting specialists in site preparation, reinforcement fixing, concrete supply and underground piping.
The plant is expected to create up to 700 construction jobs. Once it comes into operation in 2014, it will also permanently employ more than 50 people.
It is the first to use advanced gasification technology in the UK, and the largest of its kind anywhere in the world.
Every year up to 350,000 metric tons of non-recyclable waste will be diverted from landfill and taken to Air Products waste-to-energy plant to be converted into renewable power.
Air Products vice president David J. Taylor said: “We are pleased to be able to show how projects such as ours can help maintain and support a strong local economy whilst also helping the region reach renewable energy and environmental targets.”
