REGENERATION bosses say they are “very pleased” after 14 specialist companies came forward with their ideas to help deliver a radical new blueprint.

Hartlepool Borough Council wants to work with an organisation which can develop an ambitious master plan covering the town’s marina and waterfront areas.

It follows the council’s launch of the Hartlepool Vision event which was attended by more than 150 representatives from business and industry – which officials say aims to revitalise the centre of Hartlepool, spark the town’s wider regeneration and “lay the foundations for its future prosperity”.

Damien Wilson, the council’s assistant director of regeneration, said: “In total we have received 14 submissions from companies which are interested in working in partnership with the council to deliver the masterplan.

“We are very pleased with the response and there is interest from many leading organisations with a track record of delivering successfully on regeneration schemes, both nationally and internationally.

“We are currently evaluating the submissions with a view to drawing up a shortlist over the next couple of weeks.

“This will be followed by formal interviews, presentations and further evaluation prior to the appointment of an expert company next month.”

This will be followed by consultation with residents, businesses, land owners, developers and other key stakeholders before the completion of the masterplan by January 2015.

Labour councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher, leader of the council, said: “This is a really positive start to our bold and ambitious plans to regenerate key areas of the town.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing what our potential partner companies have to offer in helping to drive forward our vision for Hartlepool.

“The master planning of the waterfront and surrounding area will not only set out in detail what can be delivered, but also show where and how this can be achieved.

“Our aim is to create major new retail and leisure facilities, increase the town’s profile as a visitor destination and produce much-needed job opportunities for the town.

“It is all about promoting Hartlepool as a quality, thriving destination to live, work and visit.”
