A REPAIR scheme on a major road in Hartlepool has left motorists facing delays.

Works to the gas network have affected traffic on the A689 Stockton Road, at the roundabout with Belle Vue Way and Stockton Road, which are due to last a week.

Resurfacing work is also being carried out in Catcote Road and is expected to last four weeks.

Northern Gas Networks have started work on the A689 Stockton Road following a gas leak.

North and south-bound directions are effected, with the dual-carriageway being coned-off so just one lane is open for traffic.

The project, which is scheduled to take a week, is causing huge tailbacks during morning and tea-time rush-hours.

A spokesman for Northern Gas Networks said: “Northern Gas Networks engineers are working hard to repair a gas escape in Hartlepool.

“The emergency work taking place near the roundabout on the A689, Stockton Road and Belle Vue Way, has led to the closure of one lane on the carriageway and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes when travelling into the town centre.” Paul Noble, network officer for Northern Gas Networks, added: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this emergency work may cause and thank members of the public for their patience and support.

“We anticipate that the work will be on-going until the end of the week. “

Roadworks are also causing problems for drivers on Catcote Road, Hartlepool, between the junctions of Brierton Lane and Darvel Road.

This work, which started yesterday and is expected to last for a month, is being carried out by Hartlepool Borough Council with engineers resurfacing the road. A spokesman for Hartlepool Borough Council said: “There is a 100m stretch of Catcote Road which is being re-surfaced between Brierton Lane and Darvel Road.

“It started on yesterday and is going to take four weeks to complete.

“During this time there will be temporary traffic lights in place.”
