A COUNCILLOR and his wife are getting on their bikes for a 650-mile ride to help raise cash for charity.
East Durham councillor Peter Brookes and his wife Christine are planning to cycle from the Spanish/French border to San Malo in Northern France to raise cash.
Then after reaching San Malo, the couple, who celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary earlier this week, will take a ferry to Portsmouth where they will team up with their son Kieran and embark on a family 100-mile cycle ride to London.
All proceeds will go to the Rainbow Trust, the chosen charity of the Chairman of Durham County Council, Coun Dennis Morgan.
Coun Brookes, who represents Fishburn and Trimdon on Durham County Council, flies out to Lourdes on July 1 and expects to begin his marathon journey a couple of days later.
With his sights set on raising around £2,000, Peter, from Trimdon Village, said: “This is not a race, it’s more of an adventure.
“This is something we’ve always wanted to do.
“All told we’ll be covering around 650 miles and we are looking to do in the region of 30 to 40 miles each day.
“I’ve done the Coast 2 Coast a couple of times along with other rides, but this will be the most ambitious challenge to date, especially as it’s in the height of the summer and in temperatures of over 25 degrees Celsius.”
The ride comes as the Rainbow Trust, which provides expert social palliative care to families when their child has a life threatening or terminal illness, celebrates its 25th anniversary.
