HARTLEPOOL Borough Council has joined forces with its local yacht club as part of a drive to ensure a positive Olympic legacy for the town.
The authority’s sport and physical activity team is working with Tees and Hartlepool Yacht Club to reach out to the wider community.
The aim is to encourage more families to get involved in sailing and other water-based activities by organising taster sessions, fun events and training courses.
Gemma Ptak, the council’s senior sport and physical activity co-ordinator said: “This link between the council and the yacht club is part of our Olympic legacy programme and reflects the fact that Hartlepool was identified as a potential training camp for nations’ sailing teams.”
Barry Hughes, commodore of the yacht club, said: “We are delighted to be working closely with the council.”
A free family open day on Saturday, June 30, will provide introductory sailing sessions.
