A football team for the over 50s has organised a big tournament to celebrate their first year of success on the pitch.

Seaton Carew Walking Football Club has gone from strength to strength after forming last year to encourage older men to take up the beautiful game.

Next month the club will welcome 15 teams from all over the country when the Seaton Strollers as they are known host a tournament.

It takes place on Sunday, February 7, at the club’s base at The Sports
Domes, in Seaton Carew, and everyone is welcome to go.

In their first year the club were victorious in a 15 team tournament in Newcastle, were winners of the national Northern
Regional Cup and reached the semi finals of the
sport’s National Cup of England.

Team head coach Graham Button said: “I’m overwhelmed at what we have achieved. It has been a fantastic year and didn’t expect to be in the position we are in.”

Graham is hoping for a good crown to showcase the sport in next month’s tournament which will be run over four pitches inside the domes.

He said: “When we played in the tournament in Newcastle I kept in touch with a lot of the teams and contacted them and others.

“We could have had a lot more teams in our tournament. One of the reasons they are coming is because of our facilities at the domes.

“It is free entry and there will be quite a bit going on so people can just come along and cheer us to tournament winners on our own patch. The game is not as slow as you imagine.”

Walking teams from Blackpool, Leeds, Sunderland, Newcastle, Redcar, Middlesbrough, Glasgow, Hibernian, Oldham, Edinburgh and York will compete.

Fully qualified officials will be officiating the matches.

Graham once again thanked Advanced Retail Solutions Ltd and the @thirteen café for their sponsorship over the last year.

The tournament runs from noon to 4pm and will be followed by a presentation to the winners at Horny Park on Elizabeth Way.
