AUTHORITIES are warning people over the devastating consequences of using illegal fireworks.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to visit an organised display wherever possible and enjoy a fun yet safe Bonfire Night.
It comes after the trading standards department seized a large quantity of illegal fireworks, which when tested were shown to be capable of causing severe injury.
Lee Aspery, fire investigation manager at the fire brigade, said: “It is essential that residents of County Durham and Darlington are made aware of the potentially dangerous and life-altering effects that fireworks can have when they are used inappropriately.
“These dangers are severely magnified when using counterfeit or illegal fireworks.”
Illegal fireworks are manufactured from poor quality materials that can cause traumatic injuries to users.
It is important that any fireworks that are purchased have the BS 7114 mark and they are used in appropriate settings following the accompanying guidance.
