A STUDENT from Hartlepool has been granted a special award.
Abbi Mullins has gained the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) after completing a week long Rotary course at Hayden Bridge, Northumberland.
Sixteen-year-old Abbi was among 33 other course members from the North East who received their awards during a Celebration Evening at Gateshead.
The English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College student was selected by Hartlepool Rotary Club to join this year’s course after showing great leadership potential.
During the week at Hayden Bridge she took part in a range of challenging activities including walking the Roman Wall, exploring lead mines, gorge walking, power boarding, rock climbing, abseiling and an overnight survival camp.
Club President Barbra Midgley said: “RYLA really works and it was great to see the impact on Abbi.
“She had a fantastic week, gained in confidence and significantly improved her leadership skills.
She added, “One of our aims is to help and encourage young people in the town and RYLA is one of our many Youth Service projects.
“Abbi was an excellent candidate for the course and we are really pleased that we have been able to help her so much.”
