Shock death of journalist

A WELL-respected journalist who worked for the Hartlepool Mail’s sister paper the Sunderland Echo has died suddenly.

Ian Laws, 41, was well-known for his coverage of Sunderland Football Club, and more recently was the Echo’s digital editor.

Mr Laws’ match reports from Sunderland games regularly appeared in the Mail.

Mr Laws died suddenly last night.

Mail sports editor Roy Kelly, who worked closely with Mr Laws, said: “We were all very shocked to hear about Ian’s death.

“He was a first-class journalist, and a well-respected guy. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this sad time.
