The Mail is urging residents and businesses to get behind our athletes’ bid for glory by pinning up our Going For Gold posters.

Mike McKie, 44, who runs the shop with his wife Angela, 43, got the ball rolling by putting up three of the patriotic posters in the windows of the shop in Egerton Terrace.

He was joined by excited children waving their Union Jack flags.

Mike, a dad of six, said: “I think it’s absolutely fantastic what Jemma and Savannah are doing.

“It shows all the young generation that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it.

“I fully support everything they do. It just goes to show that it doesn’t matter where you are from you can achieve anything you want.

“I think they are fantastic role models for the town.”

Mike and his family will be glued to the set and following Jemma and Savannah’s progress closely.

He added: “The children are really enthusiastic about the Olympics. I have noticed there has been quite a few children playing on the field recently so it could be that the Olympics has inspired them.”

Boxer Savannah, 21, of the Dyke House area of Hartlepool, will be hoping to add to her World Champion title when she competes in the 75kg Middleweight boxing on Sunday, August 5.

And swimmer Jemma, 22, hopes to bag a medal in the women’s 200m butterfly on Tuesday morning.
