SHOPPERS were evacuated after a false alarm at a supermarket.

The Asda store, in Marina Way, Hartlepool, had to ask customers to leave temporarily after a fire alarm activated at the store around 7.45pm on Friday.

Two crews from Stranton Fire Station attended the store but it emerged the alarm was due to a fault on the sprinkler system.

A spokesman for Stranton Fire Station said: “We sent two pumps to the store around 7.50pm.

“A fault on the sprinkler system set the alarms off.

“The store was evacuated when the alarms went off but only for a few minutes.”
