RETAILERS and shop workers had their hard work recognised at Middleton Grange Shopping Centre’s first awards ceremony.

The shopping centre launched its Embrace Retail Awards to recognise excellence and customer service among its 140 stores and market stalls.

More than 1,000 nominations flooded in and dozens of staff who work in Middleton Grange turned out yesterday morning as the awards were handed out.

Colleagues at Sally Hair and Beauty were celebrating after the salon was named as retailer of the year, while Specsavers was named as the first winner of the embrace award.

Other winners included BHS, which won the shop window of the year, Special Occasions which was announced as winner of the Marker Hall stall of the year award and security guard Sean Eddy, who was named Middleton Grange employee of the year.

Another member of staff who was celebrating was Charlotte Keegan, who works at Warren James and was named as the retail shooting star of the year.

Mark Rycraft, manager of Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled at the success of the first ever retail awards.

“It’s a great way to celebrate the contribution that staff make in welcoming customers to Middleton Grange.

“The fact that we received almost 1,000 nominations proves that shoppers enjoy visiting Middleton Grange and value the service and experience they get here.”

Ian Walker, director of Specavers in Hartlepool, added: “It’s the first time Middleton Grange has held an awards ceremony and it’s been a very positive experience.

“The ceremony itself was excellent and very professional – I’m sure this is something that will continue successfully every year.”
