Hartlepool hero Craig Winspear is to return to the town with a silver medal after helping his country to second place in the Invictus Games.
The former High Tunstall College of Science student was part of the UK side which reached the final of the basketball competition.
After an excellent run, Craig and his team-mates were beaten 48-16 by a strong USA side in the gold medal match in Orlando, Florida.
Craig's medal win comes just five years after his life hung in the balance following a bomb blast while serving in Afghanistan in December 2011.
The 23rd Pioneer Regiment soldier lost both his legs when he slipped on wet ground and landed on a live bomb.
After five months in hospital, he fought back, learning to walk on prosthetic legs. He won a Hartlepool Mail Local Hero Award in 2013.
As well as basketball, Craig also competed in the individual shot-put event in the Games, and finished 12th in the heats.
