A PERFORMER has won the chance to sing a duet during a stage show at a popular venue.
Hartlepool’s Val Boyers won a talent contest to duet with swing singer Jason Isaacs at the Newcastle City Hall next month.
Val, 36, was picked by a panel of judges, including Jason, Faye Tozer from 1990s pop sensation Steps and top Metro Radio presenter Anna Foster, after organisers were inundated with applications from all over the region.
Steps’ singer Faye has recently been performing with Jason and his big band and auditions were held to find a replacement after one of the members left.
Eighteen hopefuls were selected to perform at the audition in Jesmond, Newcastle, and four finalists then sang alongside Jason.
Winner Val, who grew up living in Stanhope Avenue, Hartlepool, says it has all been a dream come true as she normally performs in pubs, restaurant and at weddings, and had never sung at such a big venue.
The former student at High Tunstall School and Hartlepool College of Further Education added: “To be on stage like this it is going to be the biggest thing I have ever done.
“I’m really excited. I’m shell-shocked, it will be a great experience.”
The performance will be staged at the City Hall on Saturday, March 24, and the singers will be backed by the Dave Connolly Big Band.
Mum-of-two Val, who now lives in Stockton and is a self-employed singer, added: “Jason is a great singer and the whole big band thing is incredible. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be performing at the City Hall in Newcastle, let alone with someone like him.
“I’m more used to singing in local pubs with my guitar, so this is a totally different genre for me, but I know I’m going to love the experience and can’t wait.”
