Ronnie Moore is back where he belongs at 3pm on a Saturday – in a dug-out.

Last weekend when Pools were kicking off at York City, Moore was sat in a bar in a Spanish resort!

I made the girl behind the bar change the channel over from the West Ham game so I could see how we were getting on

The Hartlepool United manager wife’s, Ange, had given her lesser half “an hour” off to follow Pools at Bootham Crescent via Soccer Saturday, hosted by Jeff Stelling.

Ronnie flew out to Spain last week to be with daughter, Charlotte, who was taken ill on a family holiday.

“My missus gave me permission to go out for an hour and watch the game,” said Moore. “It wasn’t easy, sitting there waiting for Jeff Stelling to tell me what’s going on and my heart was pounding like mad.

“I don’t think it was good idea on reflection – it might have been me who ended up in hospital!

“‘I just sat and had a pint with my father-in-law and watched the scores come in.

“I made the girl behind the bar change the channel over from the West Ham game so I could see how we were getting on.

“[Media manager] Mark [Simpson] asked me if I wanted to log on to the commentary of the game, but there was no chance of that – it’s bad enough when you don’t know what’s happening and can’t do anything, let alone listening to every kick.”

Moore said he was ‘clocked’ by some customers, who found it strange he was sat with them rather than with his team.

“One or two recognised me in the bar, especially when I’m on the phone to [chief executive] cheering,” he said.

“Everyone around was following it with us so it was good. When we got the winner there was a little scream and a shout

“It was a funny way to spend an afternoon.”

Charlotte is on the mend, with Ronnie adding: “I’d like t thank everyone, from the chairman down to the girls in the office, they have been fantastic and right behind me.

“I’ve had messages from supporters of every club wishing my little girl well.”
