TWO women were taken to hospital after their cars collided on an icy stretch of road.
Police say a Peugeot 307 travelling west along the A181 near Wheatley Hill appeared to have hit a patch of ice before skidding into the path of a Suzuki travelling east.
A Durham Police spokeswoman said both female drivers were taken to the University Hospital of North Durham but are not believed to have suffered any serious injuries.
The road was closed for around two hours while the vehicles awaited recovery.
A crew from Peterlee Fire Station was called to the incident, around 8.10am yesterday, but the drivers had managed to get out of their cars safely before firefighters arrived.
