South Shields star Anthony Nelson wins Commonwealth title

FIGHT ... Anthony Nelson

ANTHONY Nelson is the new Commonwealth champion.

The South Shields hero clinched victory at the Metro Radio Arena after opponent Jamie Wilson’s corner retired the brave Scot.

Nelson had dominated the sixth round with a relentless assault.

It seemed a stoppage was inevitable and the Wilson corner had the towel ready.

But the 23-year-old from Dundee made it to the bell with great fighting instinct.

Referee Marcus McDonnell went to the red corner to check on the boxer’s welfare and accepted the retirement after the exhausted underdog could not go on.

It sparked delirious scenes inside and outside the ring as Nelson was hugged by coach Mal Gates, while the Nelson fans went mental in the Newcastle venue.

Nelson had the best of the first three rounds though Wilson came back well in the fourth with some good body shots.

However, the 29-year-old was back on his game in the fifth round and when he launched a sustained assault in the sixth, an early conclusion was inevitable.

What a night for Nelson and South Shields.
