A HEROIN addict stole goods from a shop because she had split up from her drug-dependent boyfriend.
Samantha Gray was brought before Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court in custody after taking four containers of washing gel from the Tesco Express store, in the town’s York Road.
Prosecuting, Samantha Morgan-Bayliss said: “She was seen concealing the items by a security guard. As he walked to the entrance and exit door she was just about to leave the shop and he took hold of her.
“She managed to break free and made good her escape but she dropped the items and they were recovered by the store.
“The incident was caught on CCTV and when she was arrested she made full and frank admissions in interview. She said had she not been stopped she would have sold the goods for money in order to get drugs.
“She admitted having a drug addiction and that she uses heroin and is also on a methadone programme.”
Gray, of Rugby Street, Hartlepool, pleaded guilty to committing the theft on May 14.
John Relton, mitigating, said: “The situation is that my client and her then partner had similar problems and leaned upon one another to help them through their problems including drug treatment and there’s a gap of offending from November 2009 and the start of May 2011 when they did not trouble the courts.
“This offence can coincide with the demise of that relationship which has resulted in her taking illegal substances again and dropping out of drug treatment.”
Chairman of the bench Sandra Mason sentenced Gray to a 12-month community order with 40 hours unpaid work.
