A LADIES football team has been given an early season boost thanks to a firm of funeral directors.
Hartlepool firm Mason & Gerald Martin is the new shirt sponsor of the ladies team at St Francis 2000, which is based in Rossmere Way.
The established club has about 250 players ranging in age from under eights to adults, playing across 10 teams.
The ladies team, which has been running for more than three years, play in the North East Regional Women’s Football League.
Club bosses have welcomed the financial boost.
Mick Allen, secretary at St Francis 2000, said: “We are very grateful for this kind kit sponsorship donation.
“Times are hard at the moment for a lot of people and businesses, so we really appreciate any help we do receive.
“The sponsorship money has helped pay for the strips.
“If anybody else would like to sponsor any of the other teams we have then please get in touch.”
The St Francis 2000 Ladies team play their home games at Grayfields, off Jesmond Gardens.
The level of competition is high as they play just three leagues below the Women’s Premier League.
Members of the ladies team range from 16 upwards and they are always looking for new members.
So far they have played two games this season, an 11-2 defeat to a team from the Whitley Bay Academy in the Durham County Cup, and a 3-2 victory against Peterlee Ladies a league game.
Gerald Martin, senior director of the Park Road-based firm, said: “This year we are happy to sponsor St Francis 2000 Ladies Football Club who play in the North East Regional Women’s Football League.
“We, at Mason & Gerald Martin, are happy to be able to sponsor these ladies this season.
“I look forward to attending a few matches and we always enjoy helping out in the community.”
