DELIGHTED footballers could be a step away from lifting their next trophy.
The lads on the Hartlepool United Disabled Supporters Association team have been nominated for a Hartlepool Mail sports award.
It would be an impressive new honour for the team which recently won a competition in Harrogate.
Keith Malham, the team’s secretary and manager, said: “It is absolutely brilliant. We do it for fun but these are a really good bunch of lads.
“Playing football gives them a sense of pride and something to do.
“They love football and for someone to nominate them is really heartwarming.”
The team consists of men from 18 to their early 40s with different disabilities.
“They have been formed for four years and most of our players support Hartlepool United. They are all local lads and we play all over the North East,” added Keith.
The highlight of their history so far came at Harrogate where they won their section of the tournament.
“They are dedicated lads and they play for each other,” said Keith.
“They are a good bunch of boys.”
The team was nominated in the Disabled Team of the Year section of the awards by Neil Appleyard who said: “Having been formed for such a small space of time, their efforts and endeavours have been a credit to them, their manager Keith Malham and Hartlepool in general.”
