DEDICATED athlete Richard Morrell certainly puts in the miles for the love of his sport.

The Hartlepool 25-year-old can often be seen tackling a five-mile run during his dinner hour at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle where he works as a sonographer.

And then, after his commute back to his Hartlepool home, he’ll do another training run or put in a weight session.

But it’s that sort of dedication which has seen the rising star take a string of honours in the last 12 months.

He has represented Great Britain Students at Cross Country level.

He has represented England, also in cross country.

He won a gold medal in the national championships team event.

He took silver at the Newcastle Town Moor 10k event.

And bronze at the British Universities 5000 metres.

Now, Richard has been nominated for a Hartleool Mail Sports Award in the Sports Personality of the Year section.

“That’s great news,” said Richard, 25, “It is really nice that someone would do that for me.”

By day, Richard deals with ultrasound at the Freeman where he has worked for two years.

But this year, he has blossomed as an athlete and has won an international vest for the first time.

The former High Tunstall student’s next big challenge is in November in Liverpool when he will tackle the trials for the European Cross Country Championships.

After that, he will aim to get another international vest in Edinburgh and challenge for other national honours.

But he admitted: “It would be nice to win an award off the track as well.”

We have already received nominations in the Hartlepool Mail Sports Awards, but we want many more and anyone can nominate.

There are 13 categories to choose from, covering all aspects of the sporting world.

Whether you compete internationally, or just enjoy sport at a more local level, it doesn’t matter.

We want to honour the heroes who do our town proud at all standards of competition.
