YOUNGSTERS were spot on with their football skills after being crowned winners of an annual shoot-out competition.
Five boys from St Joseph’s Primary School, in Blackhall, have taken home the Hartlepool United Community Sports Foundation penalty shoot-out trophy.
Dan Thubron, Michael Hogan, Joshua Bugg, Ryan Rookes and Adam Turner were victorious after beating Hartlepool’s Brougham Primary School 4-3.
The penalties were taken in front of a crowd of almost 3,000 spectators at one of the final games of the season at Victoria Park.
The Year 5 and 6 lads qualified for the final after playing penalty shoot-outs against other schools from the Hartlepool and east Durham area.
In total, 32 schools took part in the competition, which took place from September to April.
Lynda Doyle, the school’s PE co-ordinator and acting deputy head, said: “They went on to the pitch at half-time and each team had to take five penalties each before it went to sudden death.
“The boys were really nervous before they went on, but when they took the penalties they were brilliant.
“They were really proud of themselves, as we all are at the school.”
As well as the trophy, St Joseph’s, based in Coast Road, also received medals.
A Hartlepool United spokesman said: “We are delighted this competition was a huge hit with the kids.”
