Steering wheel snapped off

POLICE are appealing for information after a bizarre case of criminal damage to a car.

Officers say a Vauxhall Corsa was parked in Maritime Crescent, in Grants Houses, between Horden and Easington Colliery, when someone bent back the driver’s door, got inside the vehicle and snapped the steering wheel away from the steering column.

Police say this may have been done to remove a part from within the wheel or column.

PC Lucy Oxley, of Easington Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The location is generally a low crime area and the method used is quite unusual.”

Anyone with information about the incident, between 9pm on Monday and 8.30am on Tuesday, is asked to call Easington Neighbourhood Policing Team or Peterlee Priority Crime team on 101.
