An optometrist has been stunned by the entries in the competition to find the winner of a football strip.

Ross Hutcheson, of Specsavers in Hartlepool, said: “We have been greatly impressed and humbled by some of the stories around why clubs should have new strip.

“It will be very difficult to choose a winner from so many worthy entries.”

He told how Specsavers’ involvement in the contest was timely, as there has been a marked rise in myopia across the countries in the developed world.

He added: “Many organisations see it as an epidemic sweeping the western world, it is increasing so rapidly.

“I do believe that we need our children to play outside and enjoy the benefits of playing in the fresh air. Strangely enough it helps them from developing shortsightedness and so I feel it fits perfectly with my everyday role of optometrist.”

We are now a week into the competition – run by Specsavers, in conjunction with the Hartlepool Mail – to find one worthy team to proudly wear a new kit.

But with plenty of time still to go, we are sure there are others out there who would still like to put themselves in the running. To enter, send a letter on why you deserve to pick up this fantastic prize – in the colour of your choice.

Make sure you include your name, telephone number and email address.

You should also include plenty of detail about the team you represent and why you deserve to win this great prize courtesy of Specsavers.

The town’s Specsavers branch is continuing to do great work in the community.

It won the Hartlepool Business Awards community category this year after supplying hi-visibility vests for schoolchildren to help keep them safe.

It is using part of the prize to supply the new strips for the winning entry.

Now comes your chance to be a winner. To be in the competition running, email your entries by Monday, November 16 to chris.cordner@jpress.co.uk
