A HEALTH worker has seen a simple Facebook post asking her friends to join her on walks blossom into a social group that now has more than 100 members.
Susan Leonard wanted to boost her fitness and her social life and placed a message on her social network page asking if any of her friends wanted to start going on walks.
Friends started showing an interest and then friends of friends were keen to get the walking bug.
So much so that the Mammy Long Legs Facebook page was set up – and it now has more than 110 members.
Angela, who lives in the Hart Lane area of Hartlepool, said she was astounded with the success of the group, especially as she only made her initial plea on June 26.
She said: “I asked a couple of my friends if anyone wanted to start walking a couple of nights a week. “We’ve now got 110 members.”
Susan, who is mum to Anji and Stephen Leonard and gran to Eliza Leonard, three, works as a rheumatology specialist nurse for North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust.
She said since her dogs were getting old that she wasn’t getting out as much as she had liked. “It started off as just my friends and work colleagues,” she added.
“Now we have women of all walks of life joining us. “We have up to 20 women out every week and we go on different walks and cover different distances. “This is not like exercise, this is so much fun – we love it. “We are chatting, we are walking, we are making new friends, and people are meeting up with old friends.
She said the group meets up and walks around places including Crimdon, Hart, the Headland and Greatham.
“Some people are just on their own and wanting companionship,” said Susan.
Susan said another had moved to town from Scotland and had found the group helpful for making new friends.
She added that their first walk took 35 minutes, and now they walk for anything up to two hours, covering up to eight miles.
Now the women meet twice a week, with the various walks listed on the Facebook page.
Members have also met socially, even helping Susan to celebrate her 60th birthday recently. There are also plans for bus trips.
