A DUAL carriageway was closed and tailbacks were caused after a two-car crash.

The incident happened on the A19 northbound, north of the A181 and two miles south of Peterlee.

It caused tailbacks back to Hutton Henry and saw emergency services rush to the scene.

No one was injured in the incident, which happened around 3.50pm on Friday, although rapid response paramedics were on scene just in case they were needed.

A crew from Peterlee Fire Station was also sent to the scene following reports of smoke coming from one of the cars, but no action was needed by the fire service.

The vehicle was recovered by the Highways Agency and the road was re-opened by 4.30pm.
