Drivers are being urged to take extra care this morning, with weather alerts in place across the region.

The Met Office has yellow warnings in place for both snow and ice until noon today.

Falls of up to 5cm of snow are predicted on the hills ground and up to 2cm on lower ground.

And drivers are being reminded that snow can hide other hazards.

Cleveland and Durham Police's traffic unit put out a statement first thing: "Conditions across the two force areas are poor as we start this Monday morning. A further warning for snow is in place for throughout the day.

"Please take time to clear your vehicle of any snow, make sure your lights can be seen and allow extra time for your journey.

"Black ice is hidden by the snow, take it easy.....remember snow time, slow time!"
