A TALENTED teenage singer will perform at a regional competition – hoping to make it one step closer to his dream of becoming a recording artist.

Michael Rice, 15, wowed the judges at the first audition for the 2013 Teen Star competition and is hoping to do the same again this weekend.

The Dyke House Sports and Technology College student will be on stage at the Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre, in Newcastle, attempting to sing his way to the area finals of the nationwide competition, to be held in May.

And he will be in good company at Saturday’s event, as record companies and radio bosses will be in attendance.

Everyone who takes to the stage will share the same goal, to make it to the Teen Star Grand Final to be held at London’s O2 Arena and give themselves a chance of winning a prize including £5,000 cash and a publicity and promotional package.

But Michael isn’t thinking that far ahead just yet.

“I’m just hoping I do enough to get through,” said Michael who lives in the Stockton Road area of Hartlepool with his mum, Stephanie Langley, 31, step-dad, Ste Langley, 41, his younger brothers, Cameron Rice, 13, and Ethan Langley, four, and sister, Ellie Rice, eight.

He added: “My dream is to be a professional singer, that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.”

It was nine years ago when Michael first found himself drawn to performing arts.

Since then performing on stage has become second nature to him, playing a key part in various shows with Nadine’s Academy of Dance and Performing Arts and Red Dreams.

So he insists, because of his experience, he won’t let nerves get the better of him.

“I love performing, it’s what I have always wanted to do,” he added. “The first audition went really well and it would be great to get through the regional competition.”

People have the chance to buy tickets to go and watch Michael perform at the event in Newcastle on Saturday.
