A FORMER councillor and lecturer is gearing up for yet another gruelling charity challenge.

David Taylor-Gooby, who lives in Peterlee, and his brother Peter, a professor based in Canterbury, Kent, are being sponsored to walk 19 miles of St Cuthbert’s Way, in the Cheviot hills, on the border with Scotland.

David says the toughest part of the challenge, on Saturday, August 9, will be tackling Cheviot itself, which stands at 2,674ft and the walk will end in Wooler.

The former District of Easington councillor who is currently chairman of the Apollo Pavilion Community Association, as well as lay member of the Durham Dales, Easington and Sedgefield Clinical Commissioning Group, is taking part in the trek to raise money for Councillor Don Milsom, Mayor of Peterlee’s chosen charities.

The charities are Help for Heroes, The Back Up Trust, Hartlepool and District Hospice, The Multiple Sclerosis Society research into childhood MS and local youth groups.

David, a former East Durham College lecturer who is married to Maureen and has two step-children, is tackling this particular challenge in honour of St Cuthbert, who appears on Peterlee’s town crest.

The 68-year-old, who is the Mayor’s brother-in-law, said: “I’m looking forward to it.

“I’m going on a mountaineering trip with Peter to Monetenegro at the weekend so it should be good practice.Hopefully I will be in a reasonable shape by the time I get started.

“I think we will manage it.”

David raised £700 for Peterlee’s St Cuthbert’s Church after he and Peter climbed Morocco’s Mount Toubkal, which measures 13,671ft, last September, and he is hoping to raise at least £500 for the Mayor’s charities this time around.

David, who has previously scaled MontBlanc, in the Alps, twice, says he may be in his late sixties, but “doing something like this shows you can still do things”.
