PENSIONERS are going for gold at an Olympic-inspired event.

Residents of Donnini House sheltered accommodation in Easington Colliery have been taking on their own sporting challenges.

The pensioners took part in games including darts, dominoes, pool, bowls, egg and spoon races and hook the duck.

About 60 people will enjoy the three days of fun which will come to a with a presentation celebration of medals and cups.

The sessions have been put on as part of a programme of events after the home lost its live-in warden due to budget cuts.

A working party rallied round to bring them all together and boost its community spirit, with support from East Durham Homes, which manages the housing.

Hilda Nicholson, 86, a resident of Donnini House, said: “It’s been really good day.”

Jim Nelson, a day visitor, said: “I’ve quite enjoyed the activities today – pool, dominoes and darts.

“I can’t remember the last day I played darts.”
