A DEDICATED youngster battled back from a knee operation to complete the Junior Great North Run and raise vital charity cash.

Sam Hall, 15, didn’t let his troubled knee earlier in the year disrupt his plans to compete in the event on Tyneside and as soon as he well enough to do so he started his training.

And everything went to plan on the day as he completed the 4k course in an impressive 15 minutes and 48 seconds on his way to finishing 26th in his age group.

Even more impressive was the fact Sam, from Shotton Colliery, managed to raise £200 for Hartlepool and District Hospice.

And far from resting on his laurels, the teenager is already planning for the same again next year.

“I enjoyed it so much that I am already planning to run again next year and raise even more money for the hospice,” he said.

“I would like to thank everybody who sponsored me and helped to raise money for our local hospice, I was so happy to raise as much as I did.”

Sam’s fantastic fundraising and excellent experience taking part in the race has inspired his younger brothers, Harry and Oliver, who say they will also take part next year.

All of the money Sam raised will go towards funding the specialist palliative care services the Wells Avenue-based hospice provides to patients in Hartlepool and East Durham.

Greg Hildreth, the hospice’s events fundraiser, said: “I would like to extend a huge thank you and congratulations to Sam for such a great result.

“The money he raised will be used to help fund our patient care, which we offer free of charge to patients from the local communities of Hartlepool and East Durham.

“Sam has done fantastic, both in terms of his sponsorship and his running time.

“I would like to wish Sam the best of luck for next year and say well done for recruiting more of the family to take part.”

Runners in Hartlepool and East Durham have the chance to run for the hospice in next year’s Great North Run and the junior race.
